Every internship you will ever apply for starts with a letter, and most firms decide whether to even open your resume based on how that letter reads. This is the single most frequently examined skill in this entire paper — more questions have been asked on writing a formal letter than on any prescribed novel — because it is also the skill you will use first, for real, outside the exam hall.

A formal letter of application or complaint follows a fixed structure — sender's address, date, recipient's address, subject line, salutation, body in three clear parts, and a formal closing — and effective letter writing means using that structure to state your purpose clearly in the opening line and support it briefly and specifically in what follows.
