A resignation letter, a legal notice and a case brief are all “written communication”, but a lawyer who cannot tell which format a situation calls for will look inexperienced fast. Written communication can be grouped into several recognisable types — formal letters, informal or personal notes, reports, and structured summaries such as a precis — each with its own purpose, tone and layout, and choosing the right type for the situation is itself part of the skill being tested.
