Insurance schemes for sick, infirm, old, labour, premature

Imagine a construction worker on a Navi Mumbai tower who falls from scaffolding, or a retired clerk in Thane who lives on a small pension, or a family whose only earner died in a flood. None of them chose to be unprotected, and none can be expected to buy a large private policy. Indian law answers each with a different mix of insurance schemes, pensions and State relief. This topic maps those answers group by group, from the sick and infirm to the families left behind by a premature death.

In two minutes

Indian law protects vulnerable groups through a patchwork of statutory schemes (employees’ state insurance, provident fund, pension and deposit-linked insurance, building-worker and unorganised-worker schemes) plus health and life insurance rules and State relief after disasters; the common thread is income security against sickness, disability, old age and death of the earner.
