Charter Act of 1813

You have already met this Act once, ending the Company's trade monopoly. Now look at the same Act through a different door: it is also the document that first put education on the colonial state's to-do list, decades before anyone agreed what that education should look like.

As a constitutional document the Charter Act of 1813 renewed the Company's charter and opened India's trade; as an education document it is the source of the one-lakh-rupee fund and the admission of missionaries that made the whole later argument over English education possible.
