Consequences of Revolt with special reference to Queen's Proclamation and Act for the better Government of India

After 1857, the East India Company had ruled Bengal for a century and had just failed the biggest test of that rule. Parliament's answer was not to reform the Company. It was to end it — and to have Queen Victoria herself, not a trading corporation, tell Indians what British rule would look like from now on.

The Revolt of 1857 ended Company rule for good: the Act for the Better Government of India, 1858, transferred power to the Crown, and the Queen's Proclamation of the same year set out — in promise, if not always in practice — the terms on which the Crown would govern.
