Britain left India in 1947 with almost no heavy industry, a peasantry locked into cash crops for someone else's factories, and a state apparatus built to extract revenue, not to build anything. Nehru's answer was central planning — a series of Five Year Plans and a deliberately “mixed” economy that tried to build an industrial base without either full state control or unrestrained private capitalism.

Colonial rule left India's economy structurally drained and deindustrialised, and the Nehru-era response was state-led planning through the Planning Commission and successive Five Year Plans, operating a mixed economy in which the public and private sectors were each given a defined, legally structured role.
