Rise of Extremists and Partition of Bengal (1905)

Lord Curzon said he was dividing Bengal for better administration. Bengalis on both sides of the new line read it as an attempt to cut Hindu and Muslim political opinion apart before it could unite against British rule. The backlash to that one administrative order produced the Swadeshi movement, a new and impatient wing of the Congress, and eventually a bomb.

Lord Curzon's Partition of Bengal in 1905 triggered the Swadeshi and boycott movements and brought a new, impatient Extremist leadership — Lal-Bal-Pal — into Congress, alongside a wave of revolutionary activity that Moderate methods had never produced.
