A dhaba brawl in Mumbai can put one man in front of two entirely different courts. The State prosecutes him for assault, and the man he hit sues him separately for the hospital bill. Same fight, two proceedings, two rulebooks, two remedies. Lawyers call this “the divisions of the law” — the lines along which the same subject splits into different kinds of law, each with its own actors, its own procedure and its own idea of what a good outcome looks like.
