A nine-minute mobile phone video, filmed by a bystander who was a teenager at the time, ended up deciding a criminal trial watched live by millions of people. The trial of Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer who knelt on George Floyd's neck during an arrest in 2020, shows how a single piece of citizen-recorded evidence can outweigh an official police report, and how a jury still has to be persuaded, charge by charge, even when the whole world has already watched the video.

Derek Chauvin was the 2021 trial of a Minneapolis police officer for the death of George Floyd during an arrest on 25 May 2020; a jury convicted Chauvin on all three charges — unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter — and he was later sentenced to twenty-two and a half years in prison.
