It is easy to forget, sitting in a classroom that is roughly half women, that the vote you will one day cast was denied to women in most of the world for the whole of recorded political history until barely a century ago, and had to be fought for, argument by argument, against people who considered the case against it obvious.

Women's enfranchisement was resisted through arguments about women's supposed nature and social role, and won through decades of organised campaigning — most visibly in the United States, where the movement culminated in the Nineteenth Amendment giving women the constitutional right to vote.
