Article 19 of the Constitution lets you speak your mind, choose your trade and move freely across the country, and Article 21 protects your life and personal liberty from the State itself. None of that was inevitable — it is the specific inheritance of one political ideology, liberalism, which this topic introduces before the module works through its rivals.

Liberalism is the political ideology that places individual liberty at the centre of political life, treating the individual, not the State, class or community, as the basic unit whose freedom and rights government exists to protect and, in its modern form, to actively enable.
