Relevance of Sociology to Law

The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 assumes a certain picture of the Indian family. The SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act assumes a certain picture of caste. Every statute you will study rests on assumptions about how society works — and those assumptions can be wrong, outdated, or contested. Sociology is the discipline that checks them. This is the topic the whole paper exists to justify: why does a law student, of all people, need sociology?

Sociology is relevant to law because law is a product of society, operates on society, and can only be understood, drafted, applied and reformed correctly if the lawyer understands the social reality it addresses.
