Grammar [Marks Allotted 5]

Everything else in this paper asks you to build something — a paragraph, a précis, a speech — and building things is judgment-heavy, which means marks can be argued about. Grammar does not work that way. A homophone is either spelled correctly for its meaning or it is not. A stressed syllable is either marked correctly or it is not. A sentence is either transformed correctly from simple to complex or it is not. The syllabus itself states the value of this section in its own title, and that certainty is exactly what makes it worth mastering completely rather than partially.

Grammar in this module carries five marks by the syllabus’s own heading, and it covers three narrow, rule-based skills — homophones, stress and pronunciation, and transformation of sentences — each of which rewards accuracy on sight far more than it rewards writing ability, making this the most reliably scoreable section in the whole paper.
