Paragraph Writing & Note Writing — Activity

Ask a first-year to describe their weekend and you get one long, breathless sentence with three ideas fighting inside it. Ask the same student to write a paragraph and something changes — the sentence has to organise itself. That discipline, applied on purpose, is the whole of paragraph writing. Note writing is the opposite skill wearing the same clothes: instead of expanding one idea into several sentences, you compress a topic you already know into the fewest sentences that still cover it. This is the one topic in the paper where the exam hands you no passage at all — you supply the content yourself, which is exactly why it rewards practice more than any other.

In two minutes

A paragraph is one idea, opened by a topic sentence, developed by two or three supporting sentences, and closed by a sentence that ties it off — a note is the same discipline run in reverse, compressing a topic you know into a short, ordered write-up with no topic sentence required.
