Writing Skills

You type a message to a friend in half sentences, and ten minutes later you must write a formal note for your college file. The switch feels awkward — writing skill is not knowledge of English, it is knowing which shape a piece of writing needs. A paragraph organises one idea. A note compresses. A summary cuts without losing meaning. A report writes for a reader who was not in the room. This heading is four disciplines sharing one name, and each is graded on its own terms.

Writing Skills is not one skill but four — paragraph writing, note writing, summary (précis) writing, and report or article writing — and each is marked by a different yardstick, so the first job in any writing question is naming which one you are being asked to do.
