A tap runs strangely loud one morning. Before you call the plumber, you guess: maybe the pressure valve is faulty. That guess is a hypothesis, and whether you happen to be right or wrong, this topic is about what makes that guess a good one to spend time testing.

A hypothesis is a provisional, testable explanation offered for facts not yet fully understood, and it earns the name good only if it is relevant, self-consistent, testable, compatible with established knowledge, simple, and at least as satisfactory as its rivals.
