When the United Kingdom accused Albania of mining a strait its warships had every right to pass through, the two states did not fight it out, they took the dispute to a court that had existed for barely two years. That case, filed in May 1947, was the very first entry on the ICJ's docket, and the Court has been settling and clarifying international law ever since. This topic asks what that Court actually is, who can use it, and for what.

The International Court of Justice is the UN's principal judicial organ, made up of 15 independent judges, and it does two distinct jobs: deciding contentious cases between consenting states, and giving advisory opinions to authorised UN organs on legal questions.
