Human Security –Asylum seekers, Migrants and Refugees, the differences

A person fleeing bombs, a person fleeing poverty, and a person who has just crossed a border and is waiting to find out which of the two the law will call them — all three might appear in the same news photograph, and only one of the three legal labels for them carries an international guarantee against being sent back.

Refugees, asylum seekers and migrants are legally distinct categories under international law — the difference decides whether a person has an enforceable right not to be returned to danger, and the exam asks for that distinction directly and often.
