Specialized agencies — Functions and role

Ask why the WTO exists and most students say “trade” and stop there. Ask what OPEC actually wants, why SAARC barely functions, or why NATO invoked a clause called Article 5 exactly once, and the confident answers dry up — yet some version of this single syllabus entry has been asked in nearly every paper this module has ever set. It rewards exactly one kind of preparation: know each organisation’s job in one sentence, its one defining fact, and the one criticism attached to it.

A UN specialised agency is an autonomous body linked to the UN by agreement, each running one field of the world’s business — trade, money, labour, health, education, children, food — while a regional organisation is a club of neighbouring or like-minded States cooperating outside the UN system entirely; the exam wants you fluent in both.
