Authorities
If you walk into the City Civil Court at Fort, you may notice a small office marked Legal Services. It is part of a chain that starts in New Delhi with the Chief Justice of India and ends in a taluka court in a small town. Who sits in each link, who appoints them, who pays them, and who answers to whom? The Legal Services Authorities Act answers these questions, and an exam answer on the topic is essentially a well-drawn ladder.
In two minutes
The Act creates a ladder of legal services bodies: National Legal Services Authority and Supreme Court Committee at the centre; State Authority and High Court Committee in each State; District Authority in each district; and Taluk Committees below, each funded by its own Legal Aid Fund.
