Services
Free legal aid sounds like one thing: a lawyer who turns up without a fee. In practice it is many things. It is a lawyer in court, a person who explains a notice in plain language, a camp in a slum, a clinic in a law college, a settlement at a Lok Adalat. The Legal Services Authorities Act does not list these as one neat menu. It spreads them across the definition of legal service and the functions of each authority. Your job in an exam is to gather them into a clear answer.
In two minutes
Legal services under the Act mean help in conducting a case before any court or tribunal and advice on any legal matter, delivered through the functions given to the National, State and District Authorities: schemes, legal aid, Lok Adalats, camps, awareness and clinical legal education.
