Time for presenting documents [Section 23]

You sign a sale agreement for a flat in Vashi on the first of March, then life gets busy. It is now the first of August and you finally walk into the Sub-Registrar's office. The clerk shakes his head and says the document is too old to accept. Is he right? Section 23 of the Registration Act puts a clock on every registrable document, and the clock starts on the day the document is executed, not the day you remember it.

In two minutes

A document other than a will must be presented to the proper officer for registration within four months from the date of its execution; the period is relaxed only by ss.24, 25 and 26, and a copy of a decree may be presented within four months from the decree.
