Maternity Benefit
Priya, a junior associate at a Mumbai firm, is seven months pregnant. Her manager says the firm will "see how it goes" about leave, and that the partners prefer people who do not disappear for six months. Can he say that? Can the firm let her go? And what does she get paid while she is away? Chapter VI of the Code on Social Security, 2020 (ss.59-72) gives a woman a right to paid leave and shields her job.
