Three Theories of Truth (Western perspectives)
"It rained in Mumbai yesterday." How do you actually know whether that sentence is true? You could check it against what happened outside (does it match reality?), or check it against everything else you already believe (does it fit?), or check whether believing it actually works for you (does it help?). Western philosophy has three competing answers to what makes any statement true at all, and each answer is a different theory of truth.
In two minutes
The Correspondence theory says a proposition is true if it corresponds to fact; the Coherence theory says it is true if it fits consistently with the rest of what is already accepted as true; and the Pragmatic theory says it is true if acting on it works in practice.
