Traditional and Modern definitions of Logic

You already argue every day — with a friend about whether a film was good, with a shopkeeper about a price, with yourself about whether to skip class. Some of those arguments are good and some are terrible, but until this course you never had a name for the difference. Logic is the subject that gives you that name, and this topic is where the subject defines itself.

In two minutes

Logic is the science that studies the principles of correct reasoning, and it has been defined two ways: traditionally, as the science of the laws of thought; and in modern terms, as the science of valid inference, judged by the structure of arguments rather than by what happens inside a thinker's head.
